Cathy Milliken joins the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra
Composer Cathy Milliken has been appointed the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra's Composer in Association for a period of three years from 2018. The appointment includes the commission of three major works, as well as other involvement as part of the ASO's leadership team, including outreach and participatory projects.
Cathy Milliken currently resides in Berlin as a freelance composer and performer, creative director and educational program consultant, and is part of the creative team for the Munich Biennale for Music Theatre. In 2016 she won the AMC & APRA AMCOS Art Music Award for Orchestral Work of the Year for her Earth Plays.
The first of Milliken's three new works, a composition for solo guitar, soprano and orchestra, will have its world premiere at the Adelaide Guitar Festival on 10 August 2018, conducted by Benjamin Northey. The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra's other Australian music highlights include the March 2018 Australian premiere of Brett Dean's opera Hamlet, in collaboration with the State Opera of South Australia and the Adelaide Festival, directed by Neil Armfield and conducted by the ASO's principal conductor Nicholas Carter.
