Andrew
Ford's award-winning piano pieces now available on a CD,
recorded by Ian
Munro. Just as The Waltz Book contains a range of
technical difficulty, so it embraces simple tonal harmonies and
dense chromaticism, folk tunes, pop tunes, references to the
music of Brahms and Ravel, Bernard Herrmann and Elliott Carter.
Some of the pieces tell stories, some are abstract and
inscrutable.

Bird chants by Don Kay (Tall Poppies), pianist Vanessa Sharman
Don
Kay, an Australian composer residing in Tasmania, has written
an impressive oeuvre of piano music. This collection contains
works written over ten years from 1998. Each work was written for
a particular pianist whose personalities influenced the style of
writing. Each of these dedicatees have, or have had, ongoing
connections to Tasmania (Ian Munro, David Bollard, Michael Kieran
Harvey, Vanessa Sharman). The music is always listenable and by
turns challenging and charming.
