Vale Robert Hughes (1912-2007)
Distinguished Australian composer Robert Hughes passed away in Adelaide last week
During his career Robert Hughes was a passionate advocate for the rights of the composer. He was the driving force behind the establishment of important organisations such as the Australasian Performing Right Association, the Australian Music Centre and the Australia Council. Hughes was also the recipient of many prizes and awards during his career, including an MBE in 1978 and an Australian Classical Music Award (2003). In 2005 he was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the Australia Day Honours. However, it is the numerous compositions of Robert Hughes that form his most important contribution to Australian music.
Further information about Robert Hughes and his creative output is published on the Australian Music Centre's website: (www.amcoz.com.au/composers/composer.asp?id=324).
