Event Details
"Symphony, Suite & Slides" - The symphony is Rachmaninoff's, the suite is from Wagner's most entertaining opera, the 'slides' is a brand new trombone concerto by Carl Vine.
Mark Wigglesworth returns to the SSO with a special treat: orchestral highlights from The Mastersingers of Nuremburg. Experience the rousing heraldry of Wagner's opera in 20 minutes without the singing! With German pomp to end the concert, Wigglesworth has opted for Russian moodiness at the beginning by programming Rachmaninoff's Third Symphony. It veers between mysticism and brilliance, nostalgic melodies and dancing rhythms - rich in atmosphere and brimming with imagination. Carl Vine raises the imaginative stakes even further with his Five Hallucinations composed for Chicago Symphony Orchestra trombonist (and Australian) Michael Mulcahy. Inspired by the work of Oliver Sacks, Vine has created freewheeling musical representations of hallucinatory states. Be among the first to hear the lemonade speaking, experience the pleasure of hexagons in pink...!
