Product details
Libretto by Sue Smith.
Rembrandt's Wife tells the story of one of the world's great painters. At the startt of the opera, Rembrandt's wife, Saskia, is dead, and he looks to his son's nurse, Geertje for comfort. But, soon enough, he betrays her for a new muse. Geertje is condemned to an asylum as Rembrandt takes to his bed the young housemaid, Hendrickje - his Bathsheba. As his genius is eclipsed by fashions for new, younger painters, Rembrandt is bankrupted. Finally he must sell the only thing of value remaining to him: Saskia's grave.
