Alla guitarra : for orchestra / Paul-Antoni Bonetti.
Library shelf no. 784.2/BON 3 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
Alla Guitarra incorporates and portrays a variety of influences, such as Drum and Bass electronic dance music, but more specifically sought to use orchestral forces to capture an aural impression of the resonant and percussive sound of the acoustic guitar. This involved exploring and deconstructing the stylistic elements characteristic of guitar playing, then unifying them into a resonating orchestral force. In order to portray this within an orchestral sound world, use of the harp and string pizzicato are obvious starting points, as well as 'richochet' string bowing techniques, recreation of the cross-string rhythmic counterpoint inherent to strumming, and timbral juxtaposition between melodies or chords shifting against sustained drone pedals. Incorporating a slow-fast-slow form, the piece has an energetic and rhythmical middle section flanked by an evocative and atmospheric introduction and conclusion.
